On 23 April 2026, Tom Halton became the youngest mountaineer in the world to solo summit Ama Dablam (6,812m), completing a remarkable journey that began with his first attempt on the mountain in April 2025.

After two unsuccessful attempts, Tom returned to Ama Dablam for a third time in April 2026. Rather than allowing previous setbacks to stop him, he used each attempt as an opportunity to learn, improve, and return stronger.

A Technical Climb

Every section of Ama Dablam presented its own challenges. During the ascent, Tom climbed the notorious Yellow Tower during a blizzard on his way to Camp 2, dramatically positioned on a small rock ridge. After resting at Camp 2, he set off at 11:00 pm toward the Grey Tower, a spectacular section of mixed climbing. After topping out, he continued across the narrow snow ridge of Mushroom Ridge toward Camp 3. From Camp 3, Tom faced the final relentless climb toward the summit, ascending the face and navigating around the hanging glacier before finally reaching the summit on 23 April 2026. The ascent marked Tom’s fifth time above 6,000 metres and a rare achievement in Himalayan mountaineering.

The Message Behind the Summit

For Tom, the most important lesson from Ama Dablam is simple: Never give up. His journey shows that setbacks do not have to define the outcome. By returning to the mountain, learning from previous attempts, and continuing to improve, Tom eventually achieved his goal. His experience is a reminder that success can sometimes take more than one attempt. What matters is having the determination to keep going.

Looking Ahead

Tom is extremely thankful to Makalu Adventure for its support throughout all three of his Ama Dablam expeditions and is excited to continue working with the company on future adventures. After completing his solo ascent of Ama Dablam and reaching above 6,000 metres for the fifth time, Tom is now looking toward his next major challenge: preparing to take on an 8,000-metre mountain in 2027.

His Ama Dablam journey may have ended on the summit, but his mountaineering journey is only beginning.
