Trip Overview
Approaching Parchamo Peak through the Rolwaling valley is a true expedition, and the perfect introduction to Himalayan mountaineering. Like Mera Peak and Island Peak, Parchamo is classed as a trekking peak, but its remote location puts it on the next level. The north ridge route is graded PD (little difficulty) but there are some steep sections and crevasses to negotiate. The steep sections will be fixed by the Sherpa guides. Also, being a ridge route, it does attract more than its fair share of wind.
The expedition starts with a scenic drive to Dolakha, the start of the Rolwaling Valley Trek. Trekking in the Rolwaling valley is like stepping back in time, traditional Sherpa villages, few lodges and very few trekkers. As you head up the valley the spectacular east face of Parchamo appears above Tsho Rolpa lake. At the head of the lake the first real climb of the expedition awaits you, the ascent and crossing of the infamous Tashi Labsta La (5,755m). A climb of 1,000m over rock, ice and snow is perfect preparation for the climb to come. Having crossed the pass, the assault camp is set just below the ridge. Having rested and recharged your body battery the summit push begins in the early hours, the aim being to reach the top soon after dawn. An unforgettable Himalayan vista is the reward for reaching the summit at 6,273m. To the north, near the Tibetan border, are mountains still to be explored, to the east is the Khumbu region and Mt. Everest.
Back to high camp for breakfast then a tricky descent to Base Camp (4,780m) in the Thame Valley. The route out takes you to the delightful Sherpa village of Thame, on to Namche Bazaar and a final climb to Lukla for an exciting flight to Kathmandu.
