Trip Overview
Kyajo Ri offers an exceptional choice for mountaineers seeking a challenging 6,000m peak in the Everest region, providing more technical elements than many well-known trekking peaks. Located just north of Namche Bazaar, between the scenic Thame and Gokyo valleys, Kyajo Ri remains a hidden gem with fewer climbers. Makalu Adventure places the base camp in a secluded high valley at 4,500m, approximately two days from Thame, the hometown of Tenzing Norgay.
Kyajo Ri Peak Climbing Expedition with Makalu Adventure
A Premier 6,000m Climb in the Everest Region
Our Kyajo Ri climb is a multi-camp ascent, with Camp 1 situated at 5,300m, accessed by crossing rugged moraine terrain. From here, the route involves traversing a gentle glacier, followed by steep scree and rock leading to Camp 2, located on a snow-filled col. The final push to the summit consists of 50°-55° snow slopes, challenging climbers with a Scottish Grade II level ascent. A rock wall presents an added technical element before reaching the exposed, sharp summit, rewarding climbers with incredible views.
Makalu Adventure has been operating full expedition experience on Kyajo Ri. To ensure full acclimatization, the journey begins with a scenic trek from Lukla to Gokyo, crossing the Renjo La Pass at 5,388m before reaching base camp. Designed for those seeking a comprehensive Himalayan adventure, this expedition incorporates fixed ropes above Camp 2 for secure progress. Our experienced Sherpa team supports the climb by managing group equipment, while climbers are responsible for their personal gear and meals above base camp, adding to the immersive nature of this true Himalayan expedition.
