Trip Overview
Pikey Peek 4065m - pronounced Pee-Kay Peak. "Sir Edmund Hillary said the view of Everest from Pikey Peak is unmatched".
Uncrowded Trail - Sherpa Culture - Views of Everest
For anyone looking for a two week Himalayan adventure, with shortish days and moderate altitude, this trek is near perfect. From the summit of Pikey Peak it is possible to view Mt. Everest, some 65 km to the north east, and several other Himalayan giants. Unlike the trade routes to the north you will meet very few trekkers; on a recent trek our group only met thirteen other trekkers until they joined the Jiri to Junbesi trail. This will be a fully supported lodge trek with Sherpa Guide and porters. Each member will have a porter allowance of 12KG. It is possible to do the trek in fewer days but this itinerary allows time for altitude acclimatization, exploration and relaxation.
The trek starts with an eight hour coach ride to Dhap where you will spend the first night...there will be several stops along the way for refreshment and calls of nature. For those on their first visit to Nepal there will be much to see and take in, keep you camera at the ready. The first three days of trekking are basically an ascending ridge walk with far-reaching views to the east and west. Along the way you will pass many ancient Mani-Walls and Stupas...don't forget to pass them on the left! Two days will be spent at Pikey Peak Base Camp (BC) allowing time for acclimatization, rest and to reach the summit...for some a chance to view Everest twice.
From BC the trail continues north through Yak pasture, Rhododendron and Pine forest to Jase Bhanjyang. On the way you will definitely see Yak & Nak (female), and if you are very lucky Red Panda, Musk Deer and Himalayan Thar. Stay well away from Nak if they have young! From there the trail descends to the historic Sherpa village of Junbesi where you will spend a day visiting the Hillary School and the magnificent Thupten Choling Monastery. The final leg of the trek will take you along the Junbesi Khola (river) to Phaplu ready for an early morning flight to Kathmandu.
