Trip Overview

This extraordinary bike trip takes you to some of the most beautiful places in the world. There are lowland villages, dense oak forests, deep gorges, lovely isolated hamlets, and the mighty high mountains.

Where do we bike? And there are friendly people, awesome cultures, lavishly adorned monasteries, wild flowers, animals and birds. So many things you may have rarely imagined.

Annapurna Circuit Bike Tour even more special with a side trip to Tilicho lake – they say it is the world’s highest located fresh water lake but we visit simply for its beauty. We start biking from lowland paddy fields, steadily gain altitude as we pass through oak and pine forests that eventually give way to the high desert country at Manang (3,579m) and the descent is equally amazing and varied. Strenuous biking is well rewarded at both low and high altitudes, on the approach to the Thorung La (17,769 ft) as well as during the descent from it.

Not recommended for beginners as well as for ‘luxury seekers’! This is where, sometimes, your bike will be riding you.

ALTITUDE ACCLIMATIZATION

At Makalu Adventure, whenever possible, we follow the acclimatization formula set out by Drs Jim Duff and Peter Gormly; experts in Wilderness Medicine. "Above 2000m, altitude illness is a possibility and above 2500m it becomes common".
"As a rough guide, above 2500m the maximum daily height gain between sleeping altitudes should not exceed 400m, with a rest day every third day or after every 1000m of sleeping ascent".
"Avoid overexertion and breathlessness while acclimatizing, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol, excess caffeine, salt and protein, your diet should be 70% carbohydrate above 3500m".
