Trip Overview

Mt. Kanchenjunga Expedition takes you to the summit of Mount Kanchenjunga (8586m/ 28,170ft); the third highest mountain in the world. Mount Kanchenjunga is the third after Mount Everest and Mount K2 in the world and it second highest mountain of Nepal located in the eastern part of Nepal. Mount Kanchenjunga is bordered by the Tamur River in the west, Lhonak Chu and Jongsang La Pass (6145m) in the north, and the Teesta River in Sikkim, India in the east.

The name of the mountain "Kanchenjunga" is derived from the Tibetan word ‘Kanchen’ and ‘Dzonga’. ‘Kanchenjunga’ means “The Five Treasures of the Great Snows”, as it contains five peaks, Kanchenjunga I (8586m), Kanchenjunga West (8505m), Kanchenjunga South (8494m) and Kangbachen (7903m). These treasures represent the five repositories: gold, silver, gems, grain, and holy books of God.

Trek to Kanchenjunga Base Camp

Kangchenjunga trek is one of the most beautiful and adventurous trek in Nepal. Although this trek is challenging and strenous, this piece of destination is a master piece attracting travelers for trekking and extreme mountaineering activities. Kanchenjunga Summit trek passes through the Kanchenjunga Base Camp, some travellers extend their Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek to the summit of Mt. Kanchenjunga. The expedition journey of climbing Mt. Kanchenjunga has to be passed through the beautiful Kanchenjunga Base Camp. Mountaineers and climbers set up base camp here and training starts. The extreme mountaineering adventure journey to Mt. Kanchenjunga is often regarded as the difficult and challenging summit than Mt. Everest. The roadway to the Kanchenjunga Base camp is very beautiful covered with rhododendron forest with the opportunity to spot the many endangered and protected wildlife, including Snow leopard, Musk deer Red pandas and many others.

DETAILED Itinerary

  • Day 01
    Arrive in Kathmandu and transfer to Hotel.

    Upon arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) Kathmandu, Makalu Adventure staffs will pick you up and transfer you to Hotel. Take some rest and in the evening we will offer you a Welcome Dinner at Thamel.

  • Day 02-03
    Preparation, Briefings, last-minute shopping, and permit formalities.

    Our Mt. Kanchenjunga Expedition will start tomorrow. Today we gather at Makalu Adventure Office along with your Team Leaders. The Team Leader will have some briefing about your adventure to Mt. Kanchenjunga. You can enjoy the last-minute shopping for your expedition trip if required. We will finish all the permit formalities and pack our belongings for the adventure Kanchenjunga Expedition trip.

  • Day 04
    Fly to Bhadrapur; Drive to Ilam Bazaar, Overnight at Lodge.

    Today we will fly from Kathmandu airport to Bharatpur Airport as early as possible. Upon reaching Bharatpur, we will drive to Ilam Bazar. Ilam Bazar is a very beautiful and old local market of Eastern Nepal. We explore the Ilam Bazaar for some time and transfer to Hotel.

  • Day 05
    Drive to Jorpul (9-10 Hrs.) via Phidim.

    Today after breakfast, we drive to Jorpul. The drive to Jorpul takes about 9-10 hrs.

    Upon reaching, we transfer to Lodge.

    Trek to Khebang (1740m-5 Hrs.)

    Today we trek to Khebang situated at an altitude of 1740m. We will trek for about 5 hours today.

    Trek to Yamphudin (2070m-7 Hrs.)

ALTITUDE ACCLIMATIZATION

To get the most from your trek, and to stay safe, it is important to follow acclimatization guidelines. At Makalu Adventure, whenever possible, we follow the acclimatization formula set out by Drs Jim Duff and Peter Gormly; experts in Wilderness Medicine. "Above 2000m, altitude illness is a possibility and above 2500m it becomes common".
"As a rough guide, above 2500m the maximum daily height gain between sleeping altitudes should not exceed 400m, with a rest day every third day or after every 1000m of sleeping ascent".
"Avoid overexertion and breathlessness while acclimatizing, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol, excess caffeine, salt and protein, your diet should be 70% carbohydrate above 3500m".

Frequently asked Questions

Mountaineers often say that Climbing Mt. Kanchenjunga is more difficult than other 8000ers mountains in the world. and takes the longest time as well. The mountain is hard to climb because the climbers have to start ascending from Kanchenjunga Camp IV at about 21.00-22.00 PM to summit to the top. Climbing time approximately about 11-13 hrs. to reach the summit, and another 7-8 hrs. to return back to Camp IV. Hence the summit day is about 20-22 hrs. long.
