Located on India’s East Coast, on the massive Bay of Bengal, Chennai is a city that isn’t always noted for its adventure activities. This isn’t because of any lack of such activities, however, but rather because Chennai has a lot of other things to be known for.
For one thing, it’s one of the more fascinating historical locations in India. Chennai’s history dates back to the time of megalithic cultural establishment, judging by some of the archaeology. Ancient dynasties occupied cities in the same area, up until the mid-17th century when the English East India Company established its own stronghold there. The city was then known as Madras (or Madraspatnam), and was gradually built into the fascinating blend of modern city and historical landmark it is today.
Now, the city also has plenty to offer tourists aside from adventure. In the spring, it’s one of the best places to catch sight of the Indian Premier League, which is known to be domestic cricket’s richest tournament. There are eight franchises facing off for a $2.2 million prize, and the Chennai Super Kings is one of the best teams. In the summer, some of the beaches in the area offer some of the best seaside recreations in southern India. Marina Beach, Elliot’s Beach, and a few other areas make for a very relaxing time. And as you might expect in a city with such deep, rich, history, there’s always some casual sightseeing to do.
All of this is worth knowing if you’re curious about the destination and would like to get to know the city while you’re there. However, despite all this, there’s also plenty of adventure to be had in Chennai and the surrounding areas. The following are just a few activities you might consider.
Rock Climbing
Rock climbing seems to be gaining popularity around the world as a means of exercise. It’s a wonderful blend of workouts and something through which people can continually challenge themselves. Accordingly, rock climbing clubs have sprung up around Chennai, effectively serving as gyms for those interested. However, you can do the real thing nearby as well. The Kambakkam area, some 2,500 feet above sea level and less than 100 KM from the city, provides a lot of climbing options for people of all skill levels. It’s certainly a worthwhile stop for an adrenaline junky.
Surfing
Arguably more than any other adventure activity, surfing is closely associated with Chennai. While Chennai doesn’t quite have the reputation of, say, Goa as a coastal getaway within India, it’s still known for its watersports. At some of the beaches mentioned above, as well as Covelong Beach, you’ll be able to test yourself in fairly reliable surf waters, as well as potentially take lessons if you’re looking into surfing for the first time. Additionally, for those who would prefer a different sort of activity, windsurfing is increasingly an option.
Kayaking
It almost goes without saying these days that boating, nd specifically kayaking will be an option at a popular coastal destination. It’s just the best way for an individual, a couple, or a group of friends can get out on the water and explore on their own. And if you’re willing to go out of your way and book an excursion well out into the Bay of Bengal, kayaking the Andaman Islands is said to be an incredible experience. This is a little bit more than a casual day trip from the city, but it’s still worth noting for those who might be interested.
ATV Riding
There is some off-roading in and around Chennai, but organized ATV excursions are the way to go. There’s a lot of challenging, rugged terrain in and around the city, and because Chennai actually has something of a reputation these days among adventure-seekers, this terrain has been taken advantage of by the ATV community. You’ll want to be careful, and work with an instructor if you’re new to the activity, but riding your own tough, off-road vehicle around some of the trails in this area can be a blast.
Scuba Diving
Last but not least, there’s the scuba scene! Surfing, as mentioned, is the main watersport in the area, and you can also get out on the water in both a kayak and another kind of boat. But there’s also scuba, for those who want to actually explore the waters around Chennai and its beaches. It’s an activity still growing in popularity in the area, but one that gives you a unique experience. The diving around Marina Beach is probably the best place to start if this is something you’re curious about.
