Trip Overview

The traditional start point for the Everest Base Camp trek was Jiri Bazar but most trekkers now begin their Khumbu adventure with a short but ‘exciting’ flight to Tenzing-Hillary Airport, Lukla(2840m). From Lukla the trail descends and follows the Dudh Koshi (Milk River) to Jorsale (2740m) before crossing the spectacular Larja suspension bridge and climbing steeply to Namche Bazar (3440m) the bustling Sherpa capital. It is important not to rush the climb as the relative oxygen level is already near 70%! At least two nights will be spent in Namche allowing you to become accustomed to the rarified atmosphere. On the rest/acclimatization day you can visit the Everest View Hotel and Sherpa Museum.

The next phase of the trek will take you to Dingboche via the famous Tengboche, Monastery (Dawa Choling Gompa) and Deboche. Having gained considerable altitude, it is essential to take another acclimatization day at Dingboche before ascending to Lobuche. On the way to Lobuche you will pass memorials to the many climbers who have been lost on Mt. Everest. At just under 5000m Lobuche is situated just above the west moraine of the Khumbu Glacier. From Lobuche it is a steady climb to Groak Shep and Everest Base Camp. For the best view of Mt. Everest, Nuptse, Lhotse and the Khumbu Icefall you will ascend Kala Patthar(5550m), it is a demanding climb, in rarefied air, but well worth the effort.

The route out is far less demanding but not without excitement with even more incredible mountain views. Ahead of you for at least a day will be the Matterhorn of the Himalaya, Mt. Ama Dablam(6856m). You will have time for shopping, coffee and cake in Namche before the final climb to Lukla for your return flight to Kathmandu.

"Above 2000m, altitude illness is a possibility and above 2500m it becomes common".
"As a rough guide, above 2500m the maximum daily height gain between sleeping altitudes should not exceed 400m, with a rest day every third day or after every 1000m of sleeping ascent".
"Avoid overexertion and breathlessness while acclimatizing, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol, excess caffeine, salt and protein, your diet should be 70% carbohydrate above 3500m".

Dad and 12 year old son trek to EBC

My son and I took the 18 day package - four nights in Kathmandu and the trek to Everest Base Camp. Given I was travelling with a 12 year old it was very important to me I used a company I could trust. After speaking with a number of local firms, my intuition led me to choose Makalu Adventures, and my choice was totally vindicated. The whole trip went very smoothly, with only a hiccup over which hotel we had chosen, which was quickly resolved without fuss. All the travel logistics went exactly to plan, and we felt very welcome and looked after. Mohan, the owner, is very professional and expertly dealt with our various dramas: on arrival in Kathmandu I needed emergency root canal treatment. Mohan whisked me straight to a U.S. trained dentist in a sparkling surgery, who dropped everything to attend to me. Similarly, when my son got a gastro problem on the last day Mohan Lamsal arranged a doctor to be in our room within 15 minutes.

Makalu Adventure provided a fantastic guide, Nir. Observing the other groups and their guides - many of whom did not not speak good English, and appeared sullen - it was clear to me we had the best guide on the mountain. Nir was always anticipating our needs and went beyond all expectations in looking after us. His energy, enthusiasm, local knowledge and sense of humor carried us the mountain and back.

This was an unforgettable trip, an adventure with my son that I will always treasure. Thank you
