Discovering Shey Phoksundo: The Jewel of Dolpa

Shey Phoksundo is one of Nepal's deepest lakes. Situated at an elevation of 3,611 meters above sea level in the midst of the mountains, this lake boasts a distinctive Y-shape. It spans 4.8 kilometers in length and 1.6 kilometers in width. The deepest point of this lake, in Nepal's remote Dolpa district, reaches a depth of 650 meters. It is said that this lake changes its color with the seasons, nestled in the lap of the Himalayas.

Shey Phoksundo is not only Nepal's largest but also a national treasure. It is located in the Dolpa and Mugu districts. In this national treasure situated in the western remote trans-Himalayan region of Nepal, you can find natural riches in a Tibetan environment. From the lower Himalayan region to the upper Himalayan and trans-Himalayan regions, this area has a wide range of biodiversity, including snow leopards, Tibetan wolves, musk deer, Tibetan wild ass, and more.

This sanctuary is home to about 200 species of birds, 6 species of reptiles, and 32 species of butterflies, enhancing its biological diversity. Scientific research on the feeding and behavior of snow leopards here has certified this sanctuary as one of the most suitable habitats. After connecting Dolpa with a road network, Shey Phoksundo Lake has become a major attraction for domestic tourists. Although the road is challenging, it has become the main gateway for tourists to reach here.

The breathtaking scenery of the lake is mesmerizing to all who see it. Recently, Shey Phoksundo Lake has become a center of attraction. Traveling here via the road network has become quite enjoyable. Likewise, tourists tell stories of their enchanting experiences when they see the captivating views from the airplane route. Hotels are being constructed at various locations to accommodate those who want to stay. Despite the difficulties on the road, the natural charm of the area captivates tourists as soon as they arrive. Dolpa is not the only one; Chhimek in Humla district can also become a major base for the region's prosperity. Shey Phoksundo is within the Shey Phoksundo National Park.
