Sherpani Col Trek

Sherpani Col Trek, also known as the Ice Col Trek, is so much more than a trek. Between Makalu Base Camp and Chhukhung there are two glaciers and three passes to cross, two over 6,000m and one just under 6,000m. Without doubt this is the most challenging and technical trek in the Nepal Himalaya.
NB: The Sherpani Col Trek is sometimes referred to as The Circuit Of Makalu Trek, this is incorrect as it is impossible to circumnavigate Mt. Makalu.

Trip Overview

The expedition starts with an exciting 45 minute flight from Kathmandu to Tumlingtar. Those with seats on the left side of the plane are rewarded with a spectacular view of the Eastern Himalayan giants, Mt. Everest, Mt. Nuptse, Mt. Lhotse, Mt. Makalu and Mt. Kangchenjunga. The walk-in now begins with a jeep ride to Num, previously a two day trek. From there, over the next week, the trail gradually climbs to Makalu Base Camp (MBC). It is important not to rush this stage of the trek and allow time for altitude acclimatization. Not that long ago overnight accommodation on the walk-in would be camping but now there are comfortable lodges all the way to MBC.

Having reached Makalu Base Camp, at just under 5,000m, there is time for further acclimatization, rest and skills revision before beginning the three day ascent to the 6,146m Sherpani Col. The final climb to the Col is an exhausting 500m snow slog, the team will be roped together, moving slowly, following in the steps of the experienced Sherpa Guides. As you reach reach the Col, opening up in front of you is the vast Baruntse glacier, with Mt. Baruntse (7,220m) towering to the north-west. Having set off soon after midnight you would hope to cross the glacier and reach West Col, Baruntse Camp 1, before noon. The descent to the Honku glacier is probably the most technical section of the route and can require a number of abseils. Getting the team and support staff safely down and into camp takes time and care, this could be a 16 hour day!

There is time to rest the next day as you will be in Amphu Labsta Base Camp by lunchtime. The following day is another long one, the climb to Amphu Labsta La is not without interest and the descent to the Imja valley and Chhukung may also require an abseil or two. From Chhukhung the trail heads south and joins the Everest Base Camp trail at Dingboche, until then you will have met few trekkers. The walk-out to Lukla will take you through Tengboche, where you can visit the Monastery, and Namche Bazaar, with its bustling streets and coffee & cake shops.

Additional Information
Those embarking on this trek/expedition should be well prepared. They should be in good shape, capable of hiking in the hills for up to 8 hours with a day pack. They should posses basic mountaineering skills and be confident using ice axe, crampons, rope and descender. The temperature range on this trip can be extreme, on the walk-in up to +20C, at high camp and on the Honku glacier, down to -15C. Adequate, quality clothing and equipment is essential.

ALTITUDE ACCLIMATIZATION

To get the most from your trek, and to stay safe, it is important to follow acclimatization guidelines. At Makalu Adventure, whenever possible, we follow the acclimatization formula set out by Drs Jim Duff and Peter Gormly; experts in Wilderness Medicine. "Above 2000m, altitude illness is a possibility and above 2500m it becomes common".

"As a rough guide, above 2500m the maximum daily height gain between sleeping altitudes should not exceed 400m, with a rest day every third day or after every 1000m of sleeping ascent".

"Avoid overexertion and breathlessness while acclimatizing, stay well hydrated, avoid alcohol, excess caffeine, salt and protein, your diet should be 70% carbohydrate above 3500m".

Great Service! Very good company Makalu Adventure for Expedition

I successfully climbed Mt Everest (8848.86 m). The climbing was much adventurous and challenging than other peaks I submitted before. Well it was definitely dangerous and thrilling but what made it easier and worth it was Makalu Adventures. I'm so glad my friend recommended me Makalu Adventure. The whole trip was so well organized, the sherpas (Phurba Onggel Sherpa and Dasange Sherpa) guided us all the way to the summit making the journey smooth. I had a lot of fun and the accommodation along with the food was great even in the higher altitude which I did not foresee. It was an experience to remember for a lifetime. Thank you Makalu Adventures for a great adventure. Great services

Wonderful experience of World's Highest Mountain Mt. Everest (8848.86 m) climbing

My name is Gabriella Nicola Nel, I just submitted Mount Everest with Makalu Adventure. It was an incredible experience; we did have some hiccups in terms of getting frostbite on the way down from the summit and I'd just like to thank Mohan and the Makalu Adventure team for organizing a long long rescue from Camp 3 which is extremely difficult and I believe that the company saved my life with a successful Summit. As well for the season which was a very dangerous season I'd just like to thank everyone from Makalu Adventure.
